YukHaLa

A community app for finding places to play sport in Hong Kong, and people to play with. Built for a competition.

Wanting to play sport does not always mean being able to: some people lack time, some cannot find a place, and others have nobody to play with.

YukHaLa began with an opportunity to enter Seek Our Ways, a social-innovation programme run by the HKFYG Leadership Institute and sponsored by Hang Seng Bank. We chose to explore what makes it difficult for people in Hong Kong to participate in sport, from finding a suitable place to finding someone to play with.

The YukHaLa map view: a list of sports facilities beside a map of Hong Kong with facility markers.
The map view: sports facilities across Hong Kong, with filters by sport and district.

The prototype brought together a map of sports facilities, filters by sport and district, and community features for organising activities and finding other players. We imported local facility data and tested it within our team, but did not conduct testing with external users.

We did not advance to the competition’s final round, and YukHaLa remained a prototype.

My role

I formed the team, proposed the idea, coordinated meetings and competition submissions, and developed the web app. I was studying in Taiwan for much of the project, so my participation in activities in Hong Kong was limited.
